Anthropic posts $17 billion Q3 revenue alongside massive compute bill in amended IPO filing

Anthropic disclosed a 1,127% year-over-year surge in third-quarter revenue to approximately $17 billion in an amended S-1 filing, while revealing an operating loss of $567 million, nearly $900 billion in future compute commitments, and a warning that upcoming models could reach an accelerated development threshold.

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic disclosed updated third-quarter 2026 financials in an amended S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, revealing that quarterly revenue jumped 1,127% year over year to roughly $17 billion. The company generated $33.24 billion in revenue across the first nine months of the year, up roughly 1,200% compared to the prior-year period, as it prepares for an initial public offering on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT.[6][8][15][17][19]

Rapid top-line expansion was accompanied by heavy infrastructure expenses. Anthropic swung to a $567 million operating loss in the quarter following a $974 million profit in the second quarter, despite logging $2.5 billion in adjusted operating income. The shift was driven in part by $5 billion spent on unplanned, higher-cost short-term compute capacity. The company posted a quarterly net loss of $23.3 billion, bringing its nine-month net loss to $104 billion, driven primarily by $94.3 billion in noncash charges from markups on convertible notes.[2][5][7][9][14][18]

The updated prospectus also detailed $895.4 billion in contractual purchase commitments and lease agreements, substantially all tied to compute and infrastructure, with $447.5 billion due before 2031 and $69.8 billion due within 12 months. Anthropic ended September with $131.9 billion in cash and short-term investments.[1][3][12][16]

Beyond financial metrics, Anthropic cautioned that internal projections indicate future models could imminently meet its Responsible Scaling Policy threshold for dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI. While the filing noted that no active model has yet crossed that line, it warned that significant accelerations in model development might only be identified after they occur.[4][11][12][13][21]

SITUATION EXPLAINED: Anthropic's updated IPO filing says its AI may "imminently" start dramatically accelerating its own progress. • Anthropic filed the amended S-1 on Nov 2, a week after its first IPO filing • Under Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy, "dramatically accelerated progress" reportedly means AI-driven progress at about twice the rate it would otherwise expect • The filing says no current model has crossed that line yet, and the warning is based on its expectations for future models • Q3 revenue was about $17B, more than 12x what it was a year earlier • Compute costs now take about 58 cents of every revenue dollar, up from 48 cents the quarter before • The $895.4B in compute commitments stretches to 2045, with about $447.5B due by the end of 2030 • Bloomberg reported Anthropic could start marketing its IPO as soon as the week of Nov 9 @theojaffee: "Anthropic thinks that they're on the cusp of imminent RSI. They're saying this outright under penalty of perjury, because what you put in your financial statements, what you put in your SEC filings has to be the truth."
