Vancouver's Bitcoin Dream Just Hit a Legal Wall City staff just told a Bitcoin-hopeful councilor that buying BTC isn't actually allowed under Vancouver's charter. Councilor Sarah Kirby-Yung pushed for a #Bitcoin reserve strategy back in February. She wanted Vancouver to follow the cities that are stacking sats. But the city's legal team came back with bad news. Vancouver's charter limits investments to low-risk, traditional assets. Bitcoin doesn't qualify. The city can only invest in things like government bonds and term deposits. Crypto is explicitly off the table under current rules. Kirby-Yung could try to change the charter, but that requires approval from the province. Not exactly a quick process. Meanwhile, other cities are moving forward while Vancouver waits for permission.
